What the extension does

CalTopo LPB Planner is an independent browser extension for creating lost person behaviour distance rings and directional boundaries on CalTopo and SARTopo maps. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by CalTopo.

Information used

The extension reads the current CalTopo or SARTopo map address and map objects, including marker names, identifiers and coordinates. It uses the profile, coordinates, bearing and display choices you enter to calculate drawings and update the marker list.

It does not request your device location, read your browsing history, collect passwords or require an API key. It only accesses pages on caltopo.com and sartopo.com.

Local storage

Drafts, selected marker identifiers, map identifiers and publishing records are stored in the extension’s local browser storage. Publishing records track generated object identifiers and fingerprints so subsequent updates can detect conflicts and avoid duplicates. Temporary map and tab context is held in session storage.

This information is not synced through the extension to other devices or sent to the publisher. The extension contains no analytics, advertising or tracking services.

Drawing, exporting and sharing

When you choose to publish or update drawings, the extension passes their titles, descriptions, coordinates and styles to the open CalTopo or SARTopo page. Saved maps use the website’s existing session and permissions; CalTopo may transmit and store those objects and make them available to people with access to the map. Its own privacy policy and sharing settings apply.

Drawings on an unsaved map remain subject to CalTopo’s unsaved-map behaviour. Saving that map can upload them to CalTopo. Exporting GeoJSON creates a file on your device; sharing or importing that file is your choice.

The publisher does not receive your map data and does not sell it, use it for advertising, or transfer it to data brokers.

Your controls

You can change planning inputs, delete map objects in CalTopo, and remove downloaded exports. Uninstalling the extension removes its local browser storage. Uninstalling does not delete objects already saved on CalTopo or files you exported. Removing the extension’s site access prevents it from reading or editing maps.
